The images of Omran Daqneesh, a young boy from war-torn Syria, are saddening illustrations of our failure as humans. While my heart goes out to him, I do not subscribe to the propaganda wholeheartedly.

The media has framed the child as the “New Face of the Syrian Civil War“. In other words, the bloodshed and destruction are the result of internal conflict between opposing forces in that country alone. This line of argument suffers from a case of convenient amnesia. The United States, and other countries, have played a role in perpetuating and exacerbating the civil war in Syria.

Since at least 2011, the United States has been targeting Syria for regime change. The U.S. has supplied rebels with lethal weapons, vehicles, training, and food. Since May, the U.S. has killed 167 Syrians in airstrikes – including 44 children. American intervention is never helpful. Omran’s blood is on OUR hands.

Instead of referring to him as the New Face of the Syrian Civil War, it is more accurate to call him the New Face of American Imperialism.
