Darryl Walker, Jr!!!!!!!!
This love jam thing is seriously contagious isn’t it? I actually reblogged “Love is in the air” from one of my favorite bloggers, Chevvy8 at Chevvy’s Studio. She’s a prolific poet. You should check her out!
Now that we got that out of the way…
You just straight started clowning on this list didn’t you?
I mean whaaaaaaaa?
I don’t even know where to start!
But I gotta shout you out for Mother’s Finest and “Love Changes.”
What in the world do you know about that young buck?
Maaaaannnnnnn!
Clearly, your Moms and Pops raised you right!
Then you went and pulled that classic Delfonics “La La Means I love you.”
Darryl, here’s the funny thing. I am old enough to be your mom (I would have been kinda young but not too young) and some of these jams are before my ‘time’ so I know they’re waaaaay before your ‘time.’
But, of course, good music stands the test of time.
So you know I can’t leave without dropping something on you right:
Best believe I’ll be back and THANKS FOR THE SHOUT OUT, love!

Lmao @ “what in the world do you know about that young buck”!!
Yes this love song list is catching on like wild fire! Malakhai just uploaded his list! LOL
I am hooked on the old jams! A lot of times, I come in contact with the old school because newer artists cover their songs – and I find out later that it wasn’t real theirs. I found out about La La Means I Love You by the Delfonics after I heard that Prince covered it in 1996. And I found out “Love Changes” by Mother’s Finest after Jaime Foxx and Mary J. Blige covered it. When I heard their version, I was like “damn, this is the hottest song Jaime ever wrote” and then my mom was like … umm, this is stolen! LOL. So that’s how I found out about them.
Oh and you said your brother is the personal body guard for Frankie Beverly, right? Check this out. I have “Love Ballad” by LTD on this list, partly because Jeffrey Osborne is my uncle! Like .. for real, for real! He is my grandmother’s brother … he be at the family reunions dropping mustard on his T-shirt LOL.
You are right. Good music does stand the test of time. Thanks for posting that Solo track! That was the jam. Damn, that brought me back to when I was 8 years old … that was THE jam! It is too bad we don’t have many black bands around anymore =(
What do you think of Jaime and Mary’s cover of Love Changes? I think they did it justice! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekPZexGU5mI

DEAD @ the fact that Jeffrey Osborne is your uncle!
DEAD
DEAD
DEAD
You are now talking to a corpse!
No, I’m being very serious. Here’s the funny part. On the original post that was done on Chevvy’s blog, we all did our favorite LTD jams and you know “Love Ballad” was at the top but then your girl Lady G had to hit ’em with “Where did we go wrong?” Gotdamn! Your uncle showed his entire ass on that jam! Much respect!
Oh…one time my brother (my real brother) went to see him in concert and I said, “Was it good?” He said, “It was Awesome!” I said, “Did he woo woo woo?” and he was like “DID HE? Man he woo woo woo’d his ass all over that stage!”
He puts on a helluva show! LOL!!!
We hollered.
You know I cried when you said he be at the family reunion with mustard on his shirt! I love that.
But…
Your Mama had to set you straight huh? She hollered, “That was stolen!” LMAO!!!!
Let me take a listen to Jaime and Mary…but I warn you in advance, I am a staunch Mother’s Finest fan!
Oh, BTW, tomorrow, me and another blogger are going to drop a little surprise so you gotta stay tuned for that post.

Oh snap! That’s wassup. Showing Uncle Jeff ‘nem some love! Lmao @ “woo woo woo’d his ass all over that stage.” He seriously does! lololol I’ve been to his shows and its wild! He is in his mid-to-late 60s now … but he took his shirt off and had all the ladies screaming because he had a 6-pack. How do you think this made me feel Lady G? I am sitting there with a grand total of 2 abs … and you can only see them if I hold my breath and strain a bit! Lol.
And my mom is always killing new songs for me. I will start to bop my head to a new jam and she will be like “…this songs like a Phyllis Hyman re-make” or something like that lol
I will definitely stay tuned tomorrow =D

Hey Darryl, Lady G said that I should come and check you out and I’m so thrilled to see what you’ve come up with. I’ll have to come back since I must celebrate my own Valentine but I really like your choices – really smooth. I especially liked the Brian Culbertson and Mint Condition choices. I gotta say that this was fun, not just in choosing the songs but in all the fussing that went with it. Great to meet you here. Coming at you from the African continent. Chevvy! 👌👌

Thanks bro! You are right: Mint Condition is the last great R & B band. I am waiting for them to drop another album! I saw them live in CT last year and it was a good show. But I mustttt say: if you haven’t already, make sure you are in the building is Brian Culbertson comes to town. I have seen many artists in concert … Prince, Stevie, Mint, Maxwell, etc .. but Culbertson definitely puts on the best show!

So I have to say this: What chu know bout The Delfonics? I see someone else said the same thing basically. Lala means I Love You. And I am a true 70s lady and I know he is married but “Love Ballad” is facing me right now cause I decorate with albums. I LOVE Jeffrey Osborne, there I said it. From the beginning! Yes! Damn, LTD. It’s midnight where I am and I’ve got my hands in the air, hey!!! Haha, what a great post you gave us.

Lol! That is awesome! I am a young heart with an old soul. My father instilled my siblings and I with a view as to what real music is! 😀 I encountered La La Means I Love You because I am a big Prince fan and he covered that song. And I am familiar with LTD because Jeffrey Osborne is my uncle, so I haddd to throw him/ them on this list. My parents’ wedding song was On the Wings of Love. You live in the Pacific Time Zone so you are near him, too, because he lives in L.A. That’s awesome that you decorate with albums!
Glad that you appreciate real music! My older sister and I are such outcasts among our generation when it comes to music lol

Okay I am a Mint Condition lover (although I can’t name all of their songs). I wen’t to see them in concert when I first moved to Chicago and my mind was blown. And I fell in love with Sweet Thing after watching Love and Basketball. Actually, I fell in love with ALL of the songs in that movie so I went out and bought the soundtrack. I still listen to it to this day. What was it that those old jams had that we’re missing in our R&B today?

A fellow Mint Condition fan!!! That’s wassup! They are the last great black R&B band. I’ve been listening to them since I was a kid. I grew up on “Pretty Brown Eyes” and “U Send Me Swingin”. I am glad you got to see them in concert! I saw them in Connecticut last year and they did good! I have had one Mint song on repeat for the past two months. It’s called “Never Hurt Again” You heard it before? If not, check it out! http://youtu.be/hQfz7MDJxCQ
And I don’t remember the Love and Basketball soundtrack much, although that is one of my favorite movies. What other songs were on it?
Good question. Cornel West said songs today are missing that “soul”. Most songs are computer generated. They have no instruments in them … just a producer who pushed a bunch of buttons. And record labels aren’t interested in talent anymore. They are interested in someone who looks good – and then they just autotune their voice. There are “unmarketable” women (not cute) all over this country who can sing, write, and perform much better than the leading artists today.
I’m trynna put you onto Brian Culbertson though. Funky jazz is where its at!

I’m checking out Never Hurt Again right now. I haven’t heard this! The soul is whats missing…you and Cornell are right. The computers, lack of instruments, yeah…I see that now! I forgot what I was watching when someone said to a plain Jane aspiring artist “You just don’t have the look to be a star.” I immediately thought… “we had some ugly mofos making hits back in OUR day. lmao”. Yeah I’m loving this Mint Condition.
I got you covered on the Love and Basketball soundtrack. https://youtu.be/xAoYp4K13Rk?list=PL6ACBFA68D4B1F036
Angie Stone – Holding Back the Years, Al Green -Love and Happiness, Bilal – Soul Sista, Black Eyed Peas – Completely Beloved, Zapp and Roger – I Want to Be Your Man, Me’Shell NdegéOcello – Fool of Me, Guy – I Like, Donnell Jones – I’ll Go, Maxwell- This Woman’s Work…
I’m about to check out Brian Culbertson now! What song should I listen to?

Lmaoooo @ ugly mofos making music back in our day! Straight up though! I always tell my mom: I swear, the best singers in the world are overweight black women. Sure, this is stereotypical – but to be completely honest, I love it aesthetically and vocally. I’ll take Jill Scott and Lalah Hathaway over Beyonce annyyyyyyy day of the week.
And you are one of the most thorough people I know lol. You hit me with the entire soundtrack! I have heard a few of these. I still need to listen to most of them, though. I will listen tonight and get back to you on them.
I am glad you liked that MC song! For Brian Culbertson, check this one out. Okay, but before, I’ma need you to be sitting down, take a deep breath, and relaxxxxx a bit. lol

I just listened to maybe 8 tracks or so from the L & B soundtrack and they are good. Angie took me to churchhhhh! I damn near caught the holy ghost on that one. The Al Green song was …okay. I think I have heard it so much before that I am desensitized to it lol. Okay that MC Lyte song was fiiiiiirrree, and is my favorite on the soundtrack as of now. The chorus on this is hard asf! This song is going on my “playlist”. . . only the best of the best go on it! lol. I am going to keep this on repeat for a whileeee. We need this kind of rap again .. just rapping for fun! L-Y-T-E! And that Guy song was cold! I like that New Jack feel. Don’t you miss that?!!!?

So… I can’t pick my favorite love songs in a long list but I will say that my top two are “Adore” by Prince and “Never Felt This Way” by Brian McKnight.
